you’ve got the right idea. Go to Petsmart (Petco probably has something too) and pick up a crate training video/DVD. crate training worked for our pup.

crate training is your best option. You’ll want a crate that is big enough for your puppy to stand up and turn around in comfortably, but not too large. If you get it too large, doing his business in it won’t bother him. The idea of the crate is, dogs don’t like to do their business where they sleep, then they’d have to lay in it. You also have to remember though, dogs HAVE to be walked every 4 hours or so. Puppies need to be walked even more often. If your puppy poops in his crate, don’t throw the poop away, I know this sounds gross. Pick it up in a baggy and bring it to a spot outside where you would like him to normally do his business, this will help him to understand that its okay for him to do it outside. Don’t reprimand him for pooping in his crate, reward the good, ignore the bad. This is time consuming, so before you take on the responsibility, make sure you have the time. And while your puppy is in his crate, make sure he has toys to keep him occupied. Squeaky toys are best for puppies, they love them. When you are at home, he should be in the crate for 1/2 an hour, out with you for a 1/2 an hour. When you aren’t home, he should definitely be in the crate.

The pup should be at least 8 weeks to begin with. Next get a crate. Feed him in there and then TAKE HIM OUT TO POTTY right AWAY!!!!! When he potty’s outside, PRAISE him over and over!!!! Remember: pups are babies!!!! They have to potty all the time!!!!!!! Take him out every hour or so. Make sure you feed in crate. Pups won’t mess where they eat unless YOU are irresponsible and don’t get to him in time.

To potty train a pup you need to be home all the time. When the pup wakes up first thing you do is take it outside until it pees. When it does go outside make a huge deal out of it and tell it how good it is. My pup learned in one day not usual though. But consistency like anything else is the only way to do it.
If you have a crate you can crate train it, I don’t like it but it works. Good luck

Crates work great…and when your puppy isn’t in the crate, take him/her out every hour!!! It’s a lot of work now but it would be SO much more work later on =-)
